Interview the Artist – Naomi Frost
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Naomi Frost and I live in Newcastle, Australia. I am married to a wonderful man and we have 2 gorgeous boys, Harrison (almost 7) and Ethan (almost 3.5)…who I sometimes take photos of…lol. Up until last year I was high school English/History?Drama teacher, but I couldn’t resist the call to photography so that’s now what I do.
What is your first memory of using a camera?
I remember being in Primary school, Year 5 I think, and I being in the dark room developing film – I think I still have the photographs somewhere.
Do you have any formal training?
Not in relation to photography.
What camera/s do you use?
I started with a FujiFil FinePix S7000 and moved onto a Canon EOD 450D and last week I got the 5D MkII ;0)
Do you manipulate or edit your photos digitally and how?
Most of my photography involves some sort of digital manipulation. Sometimes it’s just simple levels and curves, sometimes adding a texture and other times complete alteration. I don’t necessarily take photos to capture a moment in time – I take them to try to replicate something in my mind. I guess that’s why I enjoy infrared photography so much – it’s very surreal.
What inspires you?
I just love being able to come up with weird ideas and scenes and then try to bring them to life – that’s a real rush for me – especially when the final product turns out how I imaged.
Do you think of yourself as having a photographic style? If so, what would it be?
Well I do with my infrared landscapes. They seem to be a little different to other photographers and I think I am starting to develop my own style with portraits too. I really want to get known for my artistic portraits.
Do you make your living with your photography?
Well, up until now no I haven’t, but I am just about to start my own business…so I’ll get back to you on that one.
Of all of your photographs, which is your favorite?
My favourite portrait changes every week. But I guess the photo I am most proud of is one of my first really successful infrared image, “Nirvana”. I like it so much I even have a 20×30″ version of it on my loungroom wall.
Where can readers find your work online?
Most of my work is on Redbubble and flickr and I have a Blog now as well…and a website is in the works. Stay tuned for that one.
Do you have a specific subject or genre you prefer to shoot?
Definitely long exposure landscapes (especially infrared) and weird and wacky portraits.
What is the most enjoyable aspect of being behind the camera?
Seeing an idea come to life.

Who would play you in a movie about yourself?
