Interview the Writer – Lexi Flint
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My Name is Lexi Flint. I am a Michigan native. I am a full time emergency room nurse, wife and mom of six beautiful children ages 3 to 17. I have worked as a waitress, DJ, sound engineer, Respiratory Therapist and Registered Nurse over the years.
When did you first begin writing?
I started writing in journals as a child and usual made up stories about my friends and family. I didn’t consider writing as a career until I had children. I was never brave enough to submit anything until now.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I am still working on adopting the writer title. I am just a mom who likes to write. I enjoy expressing myself through various ceative outlets. In high school and college it was through writing and dance. I worked as a DJ and sound engineer for several years because I loved music and couldn’t sing. I also paint, but wouldn’t consider myself a painter. A friend told me after I completed my first NANOWRIMO novel that I was a “real writer” because I write. I’m going to take her word for it.
What is your favorite genre for writing?
I write poety and fiction. I love reading mystery, scifi, and romance so I am trying my hand at those genres.
Who has been the greatest influence in your writing.
My college english professor encouraged me to write, and to change my major from nursing to literature I wish I had taken her advice many years ago. My aunt Janette has always encouraged me to write. She is a retired school teacher and says I have a unique voice. Every time I speak to her she is alway encouraging me to publish my writing. One day I am going to listen to her.
What inspires you to write?
My life has been truly inspiring. I have experienced so much during my ** years that I can pull from. I watch what other people go through in their lives and pull from their experiences as well. The photographs on the http://www.storieswithoutwords.wordpress.com inspire me to day dream and say “what if?” It is really a wonderful website.
Do you read as much as you write?
I read constantly. When I was young my mom and aunt, both teachers, encouraged a love of reading in me. My cousins and I spent countless hours at the library. We lived within two block of a huge library with a wonderful childrens section. Now I take my children to the library every week and encourage them to read daily.
What books are you reading now?
I am reading TAKE ME IF YOU DARE by Candace Havens, THE BIBLE by God, DOUBLE CROSS by James Patterson, IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND The Poet’s Portable Workshop by Steve Kowit, and HOW TO WRITE SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY by Orson Scott Card. I have a different book placed in different rooms of my house so that no matter where I am there is always something to read.
Is writing a career for you? If not – can you see it as one?
I would love to be able to make a living as a writer, however I still have to pay bills. I am trying to be a consistant writer and write everyday. I post some of my writing on sites like yours to share my thoughts. I hope someone enjoys them as much as I do.
Where did your interest in writing originate?
I was not allowed to express my true feelings aloud at home, which would have been disrespectful, so I would write them down in a journal which became poetry and then short stories.

turkey bacon and a cup of tea
Who would play you in a movie about yourself?
Gabrielle Union or Vanessa L. Williams. My husband picked Halle Berry but I think he is biased. LOL
What super power would you like to have? Why?
I wish I had the ability to heal people. As a nurse I try to help people with their physical and emotional illnesses but it is just a temporary bandage. I wish I could really cure the world of all its illnesses.
What do you do to relax?
I read great books, and I write (great books, hopefully) . I also love to travel to new places and try new things. My friends think I don’t know how to relax. They are probably right. I just think there is so much to do and experience in this life why waste time just sitting around doing nothing.
