Interview the Writer – TR Kelley
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m an Oregon ruralite.
When did you first begin writing?
At age 4, I wrote a story about cat poop on my mom’s Royal typewriter. The typewriter was actually my first inspiration. I loved machinery and the reproducible precision of typefaces far better than deciding which wobbly hand to hold the pencil with today.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
age 14 – school newspaper
What is your favorite genre for writing? .
Non-fiction topical/commentary essays of around 800-2500 words. I never write fiction & rarely read it.
Who has been the greatest influence in your writing?
Tom Wolfe, Stephen King, and Mrs. Betty Cornaby, Sequim High School English teacher.
What inspires you to write?
The love of creating a detailed, multi-sensory experience out of graphite squiggles on paper or electrons on a screen. What fun!
Do you read as much as you write?
Equal
What book are you reading now?
A stack of books about American history during the mid-1800s westward migrations of European settlers.
Is writing a career for you? If not – can you see it as one?
Yes! Medical transcription and editing is my future career, school is currently in session. I’m recovering from the guitar-based artistic life, the “creative” fields hold no further illusions as a reliable income source. I want a rational, stable, quantifiable career by age 50.
Where did your interest in writing originate?
The power of words became apparent to me in reading the social commentaries of Theodore Geisel. These were cleverly disguised as “children’s books”.
Where can readers find your work online?

What is the most enjoyable aspect of writing for you?
Getting the nascent idea out of my head so it can be explored more completely and fleshed out. An idea is often like meeting a new interesting person. The more you talk to them the more you learn.
Are you connected to an online writing community?
No

Stare at pretty colored lights (incandescent, halogen, neon, but NEVER fluorescent or LED) and listen to the endless chaotic order of rain on various surfaces.
