Interview the Writer – Semein Washington
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Semein Washington. Age 18. I was born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia and am now living in Farmville, Virginia for a college education. My family includes a mother and father now in their late fifties, one brother aged forty one with two nieces and one sister in her thirties along with a multitude of aunts, uncles and cousins.I love nearly any type of music which crosses my path, being an audiophile, but my favorite would have to be Jazz. Much good art and writing have influenced me throughout my lifetime. My favorite writers include Hemingway, Dostoevsky, Joyce, McCourt and Alvarez. My favorite artists include Monet, Cezanne and Dali. My favorite poet would have to be Rumi with Sandburg and Ginsberg following up.
I am currently majoring in Anthropology.
When did you first begin writing?
Some time when I was young. Probably near ten or elven with stories one would expect of that age.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I still do not. There is a lot one must learn.
What is your favorite genre for writing? – fiction, poetry, non-fiction, commentary, etc.
All of the above. Fiction has the allure of creating worlds. Poetry of defining worlds. Non-fiction of reinvigorating worlds. And commentary of discussing them.
Who has been the greatest influence in your writing.
Mr. David King and Mr. James Joyce.
What inspires you to write?
The need to progress. To write something worth while.

I try to. But I get less time to do either than I would want.

Ulysses by James Joyce
Is writing a career for you? If not – can you see it as one?
I suppose I can see it as one. Perhaps an interest that could conceivably become practical.

In living and reading. I’d say they both create a need to attempt expression through written word.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of writing for you?
The idea that I can improve, grow in technique, and sow into a story both the gravity of its existence and some choice ideas.
Are you connected to an online writing community?
Yes. Red Bubble and numerous Fan-fiction sites.
